A cosmic line up awaits at the Wellington Place Zone this Light Night
Light Night Leeds returns for its landmark 20th edition and to celebrate, the Wellington Place Zone will be bigger and better than ever before with a galaxy of events!
On the evenings of 24th and 25th October, visitors to the Wellington Place Zone will be treated to a cosmic line up of space-themed interactive art installations, free family friendly activities, delicious food and drink all hosted within our fantastic traffic free neighbourhood.
Here’s a taster of what to expect…
Light Installations
Halo, 6-10pm
This series of interactive musical towers contain circular ‘halos’ which detect and respond to you; the closer you are, the brighter and louder they become. All the sounds work in harmony together so you can create musical magic!
Celestial Sound, 6-10pm
Celestial Sound Cloud is an interactive digital sound and light sculpture inspired by cosmic clouds and nebulas (the clouds of dust and gases in which stars are formed). Underneath the suspended sculpture, you can sing, move or dance to create your own visual and sound experience.
Moon Palace, 6-10pm, visiting takes 20 minutes, limited spaces available
Formerly a school bus, Moon Palace is a mobile observatory and an artwork – bringing art and science together and inviting visitors into this beautiful. Inspired by civil engineer and astronomer John Smeaton and the observatory he built in East Leeds, Moon Palace has been designed to spark visitors’ curiosity with a fusion of art and science – one not to be missed!
Family Friendly Fun
Free face painting, 6 – 9pm, Wellington Central
Become part of Light Night’s artwork with our free face painting – available Thursday and Friday from 6pm each day. Spaces are limited, get down early to avoid disappointment.
Yorkshire Contemporary Family Workshop, 6 – 9pm, 11 Wellington Place
Join Leeds-based artist Rhian Cooke and Yorkshire Contemporary for a family-friendly workshop exploring the different kinds of lights that we see at night. These could be
shooting stars, streetlights, a shiny slug, car headlights zooming past, a spaceship hovering in the sky or the moonlight glistening on a shimmery lake.
Silent disco, 6 – 10pm, Wagon Hoist Mini Museum
Grab your friends and family, don some headphones, and pick a playlist to bop along to with the whole crew! Our family-friendly silent disco has sing-a-long songs at the ready for all to enjoy.
Food and drink
Fuel up for a busy evening of exploring the city at the Wellington Place Zone! With plenty of options for sit-down meals and street food on-the-go, on-site retailers Veeno, Hoist House, Good Luck Club, Mad Frans and Sociable Folk will be open for business both evenings serving up hot food and drinks. We’ll have scrumptious street food available in Tower Square on Thursday night from Mexican Pilgrim, 7 Star Flag and sweet waffles from Elise & Gaston, on the Friday evening we’ll be joined once again by Mexican Pilgrim and Elise & Gaston as well as Pav’s Dhaba. Plus we have 50 hot chocolates up for grabs each night from Sociable Folk. T&Cs Apply.
The Wellington Place Zone also includes our neighbours at The Junction, just a short walk across the viaduct. Here, you can discover more fabulous installations including: Globescope – an immersive work made up of over 200 luminous spheres, each one representing a pixel. Light and sound pulse through in a changing sequence, transforming and expanding the gardens of The Junction.
Reflect – When shafts of light dance and bounce off moving water, the effect is hypnotic and meditative. Guided by an ambient soundtrack, trail your hand through water to generate ripples which are reflected at scale inside an atmospheric brick archway.
